Short and Sweet Sheep Farm is a small "hobby" farm on 2 1/2 acres located in
South Windsor, Connecticut (northeast of Hartford).
- Gussie and Jake began raising chickens and rabbits for 4- H.
- One thing led to another and Gussie was introduced to sheep by a former 4-H leader. We started with two black lambs, a ewe and a wether. Being impatient for the ewe to mature for breeding we looked into purchasing a mature breeding pair. Our internet search, timing and luck brought us to Dee & Don Lott in Missouri who were looking for a new home for their flock of nine Babydoll Southdowns. We purchased/adopted their 5 ewes and 4 rams and quickly became shepherds!!
- Fast forward....No more rabbits but occasionally a few chickens for eggs. Jake is no longer involved with the animals, Gussie is now married with children of her own who will hopefully become involved with 4-H as they get older. I continue to breed the sheep and are now working toward marketing yarns and roving from our sheep. Gussie has her own business www.nolafibercreations.com that sells needle felting kits. We both spin and dye and enjoy being able to share our handspun yarns. The goal is to get a steady business going on Etsy.com as well as selling at several New England Sheep and Fiber Shows.
- A big old Newfoundland, Odin, a calico/tiger cat named Chloe and our latest addition, Sophie, an English Shepherd puppy who has already figured out how to herd the sheep.
